Welcome Dr. Ann Van de Winckel
Dr. Van de Winckel has recently been appointed as Assistant Professor in the Physical Therapy Program, Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Medical School, at the University of Minnesota.
After completing her PhD in ‘Rehabilitation Sciences and Physiotherapy’ at the KU Leuven (University of Leuven), Belgium, she obtained several competitive research grants from the Belgian government ‘Research Foundation – Flanders’ (Fonds voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (FWO)-Vlaanderen) (2006-2012) to support her postdoctoral training in the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences, Faculty of Kinesiology and Rehabilitation Sciences (FABER), KU Leuven, Belgium.
Her research agenda comprises understanding the neural mechanisms of neuroplasticity and recovery after stroke through the use of fMRI, structural and functional connectivity, EEG, to determine the impact of neuroplasticity and brain recovery on clinical sensorimotor outcomes. She further wishes to translate the findings from this brain research to therapeutic interventions aimed at sensorimotor recovery in stroke patients.
She will teach the PT 6293 Essentials of Rehabilitation Research course to second year DPT students of the Physical Therapy Program and is excited to pursue her academic career at the University of Minnesota.
